Very close to Tours, the Château de Villandry is a beautiful historical monument that also benefits from a preserved rural setting. The monument is one of the last major castles to be erected in the region. After falling into decay in the 19th century, Villandry regained its former splendor after a major restoration campaign. It has now regained the charm typical of the Renaissance.
If the Château de Villandry is now radiant, it is because of the passionate determination of Joachim Carvallo, a brilliant Spanish scientist who bought the site in 1906 in order to restore it. He thus saved the monument from the impending demolition that lay in wait for it and succeeded in reviving the authentic atmosphere of the Renaissance through its preserved architecture as well as the gardens and the reconstructed interior decoration. This renowned doctor was the first to open up a historical heritage to the general public. His descendants, current owners of the castle, continue this unconditional passion for this heritage.
You have to take your time to explore the Château de Villandry. The large living room with a study room is decorated with a 18th century furniture, just like the dining room. The use of the salmon color for the woodwork brings warmth to the whole. A tour in the kitchen is not to be missed to admire the rustic face of this prestigious castle. You can still admire a beautiful collection of copper and vegetables from the vegetable garden. Among the other must-see rooms, the dungeon is the only structure derived from the ancient medieval building. In the Oriental Room, you will be surprised by the exoticism of the decoration and along the gallery of Spanish painters, you will never tire of admiring the collection.
Joachim Carvallo wanted to replace the English garden with four terrace gardens in accordance with French traditions. In every corner, the precise lines, the well-cut plants and the geometric patterns form a harmonious and impressive whole at the same time. Even the vegetable garden benefits from a very precise layout. Each vegetable participates in the color show that is offered to visitors. Depending on the season, it is possible to learn about gardening
