Mont Saint Michel

126 km, or about 2 and a half hours drive, separates the Château des Briottières, not far from Angers, and Mont-Saint-Michel, one of the hotspots of French tourism that marks the rural landscape of the Normandy coast by its unique profile.

Mont-Saint-Michel: UNESCO World Heritage Site

For its beauty, for its history and for its unique location, the Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most visited places in France. The site and the entire bay have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1979. Hanging on this 4 km² rocky mound, the abbey and around sixty other monuments reveal a fascinating architectural harmony, to be photographed from near as well as from afar at any time of the day and night. The tides of Mont-Saint-Michel, which are among the largest in Europe, shape the landscape throughout the day.Topped by a spire decorated with an archangel that culminates at 170 m, Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is a fine example of flamboyant Gothic architecture, but the monument also includes numerous Romanesque and Carolingian elements. The abbey cloister houses in its center a magnificent medieval garden where the silence is only disturbed by the distant sound of the waves and the sound of bells.

The sites not to be missed in Mont-Saint-Michel

In addition to the abbey that dominates the landscape of the mountain, there are many other places to explore, starting with the four museums that retrace the history of this unique place. The archaeoscope is a multimedia space that tells the story of the construction of the abbey. At the Historical Museum, you can admire a collection of watches and weapons, but also a reconstruction of the dungeons when the island welcomed prisoners. Finally, at the Museum of the Sea, you will be aware of the natural phenomena that cause the tides in Mont-Saint-Michel Bay. As you explore the rock, you will discover an impressive system of fortifications, including ramparts and towers. These buildings served to protect the abbey during the Hundred Years' War. As you stroll through the village, you will be seduced by the timeless atmosphere that reigns there, the magic of old stones combined with the absence of a car takes you back several centuries. Before leaving, do not hesitate to wait for the sunset to admire a unique visual spectacle from the continent. At nightfall, the site is highlighted by careful lighting.
