Nothing I can say can adequately describe the experience of staying with Francois & Hedwige de Valbray. On arrival we were greeted by Francois who is the most delightful and charming host you could ever have, nothing was too much trouble. The food was fantastic and very French all loving prepared for us by Hedwige. This beautiful chateau is set in extensive grounds full of wildlife and birds and has the benefit of a tennis court and a heated swimming pool. We travelled as a group in vintage cars which blended in with the grandeur of the property. The attention to detail was a very obvious factor, Francois provided a glass of bubbly before dinner on the lawns, we then went in for a sumptuous supper followed by coffee served in the lounge which like the rest of the property was full of antiques of all types and styles and where a log fire burned in the impressive open fire grate and candles were lit all around the room. These candles continued on every stair of the sweeping stone staircase and along the passageways to our gloriously decorated bedrooms where although modern facilities were in place they had been renovated very sympathetically to retain the overall feel of this 18th Century Chateau. On our first night before dinner our host gave us a little talk explaining the history and his family connection with the estate which dates back some 300 years. He provided laminated maps of the surrounding areas with suggested sightseeing routes, he poured our wine, he mowed the lawns, there is nothing this man does not do and always always with the most wonderful smile and greeting – never before have I felt more welcomed – this is their home and not a Hotel and the family do everything in their power to make your stay as comfortable and relaxed as possible. We only stayed for three nights, I wish it could have been three weeks – it is a holiday which will remain with me for ever. Thank you Family de Valbray – we will return.
